EGR Valve Replacement

This is a common procedure on a lot of 4th generation Monte Carlos. The valve, when plugged or inoperable, is usually the cause for the SES (Service engine soon light), code 53. I suggest only getting the replacement valve directly from GM. When I replaced the valve the first time, I got one from AutoZone and it looked right, but would not function properly with my engine. So I cleaned the old valve and put that one back on the engine. So far, the code hasn't come back. The following is the list of steps I used to replace my EGR valve:

1. Disconnect the vacuum hose from the valve.

2. Using an open-ended wrench, loosen the two bolts. These can be a real pain to remove but a way to make this much easier is to move the carb over. Remove the four bolts and the power brake booster steel vacuum line from the back of the carb. Then, push it as far forward and to the right as possible.

3. Clean the gasket service.

4. Using a screwdriver, clean out the ports as best as possible.

5. Install the new or cleaned EGR valve using the original bolts.

6. Re-install vacuum line.
